Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy
As part of our comprehensive orthopaedics offering at Cromwell Hospital, we provide platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy.
What is PRP therapy?
PRP therapy involves injecting naturally occurring stem cells and platelets found in the blood directly into injured tissue or an injured joint, to encourage healing and restoration of the injured area. The therapy is a highly effective tool for treating common orthopaedic conditions and injuries.
Who is PRP therapy for?
PRP therapy may be a solution for patients with tendon or ligament injuries which haven’t responded to other treatments. It has been shown to be particularly effective in treating:
- Tendinopathy/tendinitis/tendinosis
- Osteoarthritis (wear and repair)
- Muscle injuries
- Ligament injuries
- Cartilage (chondral) injuries involving the lining of the bones
- Plantar fasciitis
What are the benefits of PRP?
PRP therapy is a safe and less invasive intervention than surgery, helping patients avoid undergoing surgery altogether. It is a simple and straightforward procedure which promotes fast and safe healing with little risk of adverse reaction.
PRP therapy is also available at Basinghall Clinic, an outpatient centre in the City.
