Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP)
A TURP is a minimally-invasive operation used to remove parts of the prostate that are causing a blockage to urine flow.
About TURP
An endoscopic resection of prostate is a minimally-invasive operation to remove parts of the prostate causing a blockage to urine flow.
A TURP is most commonly used to treat patients with an enlarged prostate that is causing symptoms. Patients usually try medication first. If the medication is not working, stops working, or is causing side-effects, a TURP can be considered.
Some patients do not want to be on long-term medication and this is another reason to consider a TURP.
Patients will be placed under general or spinal anaesthetic for the operation. The surgeon will pass a telescope through the opening in the penis and use electrocautery to remove part of the prostate gland.
The operation is designed to relieve the symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate, such as difficulty urinating.
Ahead of your operation, it helps if you can stay active and do gentle exercise. This will help you cope with the operation and build strength afterwards.
The length of time it takes you to recover from the operation depends on a range of factors, including your age. However, most patients need to spend two nights in hospital. In some cases, patients can go home after one night. Your surgeon will advise you about this.
Our dedicated recovery team of specialist nurses will work with you closely after your operation to make sure you recover as quickly as possible.
