(Inguinal) Hernia Repair
Inguinal hernia repair surgery helps to repair an inguinal hernia and strengthen the surrounding tissue to help prevent the hernia returning. The repair can be carried out either by open surgery or laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery.
What does a Hernia repair involve?
The inguinal hernia repair surgery is performed either through a laparoscopic surgery (keyhole) or open surgery, both surgeries are usually carried out under general anaesthetic but at times the open surgery can be performed under a local anaesthetic. Either one of those procedure could take approximately 30-45 minutes.
If your surgeon performs a keyhole surgery, they will make 3 small incisions in your abdomen which gives them access to the area. The surgeon will move the herniated piece of bowel back into place and then either stitch or glue a piece of medical mesh into the muscle - this will strengthen it and prevent the hernia from returning.
The procedure for an open surgery is the same - the only difference is that the surgeon will have to make one longer incision of around 6-8 inches to have access to the area.
The consultant surgeon will discuss your options with you and discuss the best option for you.
What is the recovery period?
The recovery period after hernia repair surgery will depend on multiple factors, such as your age, fitness level and the procedure. However, most patients can go home the same day. Our dedicated recovery team of specialist nurses and physiotherapists will work with you closely after your operation to make sure you recover as quickly as possible.
