About BMAC injections
Bone marrow aspirate concentration (BMAC) injections are a non-surgical minimally invasive regenerative treatment that uses natural stem cell ability to heal the body via biological growth factors.
BMAC injections use the stem cells that are harvested from the bone marrow to help with the healing of osteoarthrosis and tendon injuries.
There are significant benefits to having a BMAC injection. These include pain relief, increased function, and a decrease in swelling.
Anyone is suitable for a BMAC injection. Adults who suffer from osteoarthritis can significantly benefit from this treatment.
It can be used for resistant tendinopathies around the knee to help stimulate healing of a torn meniscus.
In the shoulder, it can be used for arthritis and to augment repair of tendons.
In the hip, it is primarily used for management of osteoarthrosis.
In the elbow, mainly for golfers and tennis elbow.
In the ankle, it can be used for arthritis.
The bone marrow is removed from the pelvic bone using a needle and syringe either under local anaesthetic or sedation or a light general anaesthetic.
The bone marrow which is taken from the pelvis is then separated into its various components via a centrifuging technique and a fraction of the harvested bone marrow which is rich in these mesenchymal stem cells is injected, after processing, into the relative joint or onto the damaged tendon.
This may be added to with an injection of PRP taken from your peripheral blood.
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a type of stem cell. They make certain tissues including cartilage, bone and muscle. BMAC utilizes cells which are bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells.
Most patients experience little or no pain at the site of injection. They may have minor discomfort for a day or two from the site of harvesting from the iliac crest/hip bone. Most patients within 2-6 six weeks of the injection report an improvement in pain and function.
