Gynaecology diagnostic pathway
A one-stop service providing rapid access to diagnostic tests for patients with unexplained gynaecological symptoms.
About the pathway
Experiencing unexplained gynaecological symptoms can be a worrying time. Our one-stop service provides rapid access to expert-led diagnostics, enabling you to receive a diagnosis and onward care faster.
This service is led by a team of consultant gynaecologists and supported by clinical nurse specialists and other healthcare professionals. Your consultation and diagnostic tests will be carried out on the same day at our world-leading hospital in Kensington.
Please note, the information on this page is intended for current pathway patients only.
You have been referred because your GP, or another healthcare professional, thought that your symptoms required further investigation.
Because our service provides rapid access to diagnostic tests, you will be able to receive a diagnosis and onward care (if required) much faster.
Following a triage call to discuss your symptoms, the Clinical Nurse Specialist will have referred you on to see one of our gynaecologists.
Your gynaecologist will have reviewed your symptoms from the nurse triage and will discuss these with you in more detail at your appointment. You will then be offered a series of diagnostic tests based on your symptoms.
All diagnostic tests will be offered on the same day. You may need to see more than one gynaecologist, depending on the tests you require.
Some results, such as blood tests and ultrasound scans, will be available on the day. If samples or a biopsy are taken, it will take up to 10 working days before results become available.
Your results will be communicated to you by either your consultant or our Clinical Nurse Specialist.
What to expect
You may be recommended one, or more, of the following diagnostic tests. None of the tests require the use of general anaesthesia, so you will be able to go home immediately afterwards.
Ultrasound
An ultrasound scan uses high frequency sound waves to produce images of organs inside the body. Depending on your symptoms, your gynaecologist may recommend an external or internal ultrasound.
An abdominal ultrasound is carried out externally. A small hand-held device (transducer or wand) is held against your skin and moved slowly over the area that is being examined to get the best images.
A transvaginal ultrasound is when a small, slim probe is placed in the vagina and gently moved around to examine uterus (womb) and ovaries. This technique produces a more detailed image, which can help aid diagnosis.
Colposcopy
A colposcopy is a procedure used to examine the cervix (opening of the womb) for abnormal cells using a special microscope. Dyes may be applied to the cervix to help your consultant see the abnormal cells. You may also have a small sample of cells removed (biopsy) and sent to the lab for testing. Local anaesthetic is used to numb the area beforehand.
Hysteroscopy
A hysteroscopy is a procedure used to examine the inside of the uterus using a special telescope and camera. Local anaesthetic is used to numb the area beforehand. Depending on what is seen during the procedure, your consultant may need to take a biopsy.
If, during your telephone triage, the nurse thinks a hysteroscopy may be required on the day, you will be advised to take over the counter painkillers prior to your appointment to reduce the chance of discomfort.
Blood tests
You may require blood tests as part of your review.
