Consultants' update: January 2025
Introducing the Da Vinci SP
We are delighted to have invested in the Da Vinci SP, a versatile and high-performance single-port robotic surgical system.
We first introduced the Da Vinci robotic surgical system to our theatres in 2017; since then, this advanced technology has allowed us to deliver complex surgical care with world-class precision and outcomes.
This latest SP model comes with various upgrades and benefits, including:
- the ability to deliver robotic-assisted surgery through one single incision
- upgraded instruments that provide a greater natural range of motion than the human hand
The acquisition of a second Da Vinci system will also increase our capacity for robotic surgery cases. Currently, the new equipment is estimated to be installed in Q1/Q2.
This investment reflects the remarkable skills of our theatre team and consultants, as well as the continued growth of Cromwell Hospital.
We look forward to providing further updates in future newsletters.
FibroScan at London Medical
A new FibroScan service is now ready to welcome patients at London Medical in Marylebone.
FibroScan is a fast, non-invasive method of assessing scarring and fat levels in the liver. The scan will be carried out by an experienced nurse, with patient results reviewed and reported by Professor Raj Mookerjee, Consultant Hepatologist.
This service will be beneficial for patients with conditions including hepatitis B and C, non-alcoholic liver disease, alcohol-related liver disease, diabetes, metabolic syndromes, and more.
To refer patients, please use our dedicated referral form.
Lung cancer screening
The Chest and Lung Group at Cromwell Hospital have introduced a new lung cancer screening service to the hospital.
Smoking is the single biggest cause of lung cancer worldwide, and by the time symptoms show, the outcomes for patients are often less favourable. The new screening service offers patients the chance to receive a check-up before symptoms start.
Our lung cancer screening programme is designed to detect early-stage lung cancer in asymptomatic patients who currently, or have previously, smoked and are aged 55+.
Based on the results, we can offer preventative care plans to help reduce patients’ risk, or arrange treatment at our state-of-the-art cancer centre.
To find out more, please contact +44 (0)20 7993 4840 or info@chestandlung.co.uk.

INUSpheresis
INUSpheresis® is a form of therapeutic and lipoprotein apheresis that removes disease-promoting substances and specific cholesterols using a state-of-the-art filtration system.
As a certified INUS partner, Cromwell Hospital is the only centre in the UK to offer this innovative treatment method. It remains one of the only clinically validated, non-surgical treatment options for reducing cardiovascular disease risk related to elevated lipoprotein (a) levels.
INUSpheresis® benefits patients that have high levels of any of the below:
- lipids, such as LDL cholesterol and lipoprotein (a)
- pathogenic proteins
- protein-bound toxic substances
- fat-soluble toxic substances
- complex infection toxins
- pathogenic antibodies
The service is led by Professor Mahmoud Barbir, Consultant Cardiologist. All patient cases are evaluated by an apheresis MDT prior to approval for treatment and require a successful vascular access examination.
If you would like to refer patients or have further questions about INUSpheresis®, please contact Donna Blakeway, Professor Barbir’s PA, on +44 (0)7305 915501 or profbarbirpa@cromwellhospital.com.
Patients can also self-refer by contacting the Self-Pay team +44 (0)20 7244 4886.
Consultant compliments
Mr Amer Raza, Consultant Gynaecologist
"Mr Raza saved my life. I had been in and out of my local DGH and surgery with increasing abdominal pain for nearly five years. It was so bad I pulled my own ribs out trying to "fix" the pain as no one was helping me and I was desperate.
No one believed me and refused to scan or open me up to my horror, and I knew I was dying. I somehow managed to get a train to London for help after being discharged yet again from my local trust. The Cromwell admitted me and Mr Raza visited me after finishing his surgery.
Within 24 hours, Mr Raza found the primary source of my otherworldly pain that left me crippled and unable to move or speak. He took time to listen and examine me. An MRI was interpreted by a competent, skilled professional and degeneration was found.
I had an emergency hysterectomy that Mr Raza performed with his robot technique and found awful tumours and disease inside me.
I owe my life to Mr Raza and The Cromwell."
Dr Anne Mier, Consultant Respiratory Physician
"Thank you again for all your kindness, dedication and efforts with me over the years. I guess no words can express the extent of our gratitude as a family; we are so eternally grateful for having met you and the time you have dedicated to help me. Calling at any time of the day, no other doctor would do. I don't think I have met a more dedicated, caring, thoughtful doctor like you before. Truly one in a million with a heart of gold."

Doctors’ Lounge improvements
Following feedback, we have made several improvements to the Doctors’ Lounge found on the third floor.
A new PC has been added, bringing the total back up to a full complement of desktops and allowing access to all our IT systems when on site.
We also received feedback that there wasn’t enough food available later in the day; the catering team will now be restocking the Doctors’ Lounge twice daily in the early morning and early afternoon.
