Consultants' update: February 2025
A message from Steve Bellingham, Chief Nursing Officer
Welcome to February’s consultant newsletter! 2025 has well and truly started with a bang, and it’s been fantastic to see our services rapidly return to peak activity in the post-Christmas period.
While increased activity levels are a measure of our success, we recognise the additional challenge this brings in ensuring we have sufficient inpatient and supporting capacity to deliver our objectives. I would like to thank you all for your continued patience and support throughout this time.
As teams around the hospital work tirelessly to support patients during this busy period, I wanted to share some of the key initiatives underway that will ensure we can continue to deliver a world-class experience for both patients and consultants:
- Review of all inpatient space to ensure that any non-clinical activity is removed to free up additional rooms. This includes the move of our equipment library, which will allow us to release an additional five inpatient rooms.
- Introduction of daily bed capacity meetings to ensure senior oversight of decision making and the best use of our beds.
- Customer service training roll-out via our Always Be Cromwell (ABC) program, which will ensure our staff are equipped with the skills to manage and support patients during this transition period.
- Increased efficiency within the Day Surgery Unit to allow for more rapid and focused patient care.
We are constantly reviewing our support structures to ensure we provide support to patients, staff, and consultants across the hospital. Dr Frankton recently wrote to advise of two key leadership positions:
- Dr Thom Brown, appointed as Lead ICU Resident Medical Officer
- Mr Nikhil Pawa, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon, appointed as Associate Medical Director
These new roles will help strengthen our medical leadership and oversight, providing additional support in quality improvement and clinical innovations.
Within nursing, we are thrilled to have welcomed Julia Spindler, Head of Nursing for Quality, Safety, and Patient Experience in October 2024. Julia is a highly experienced senior nurse, who is working across the hospital to support and improve efficiency, safety, and patient experience. She has recently joined several MDTs and other forums to increase her engagement and visibility among the consultant community.
Jig Descallar has made a return to the hospital as Divisional Lead Nurse for surgery and outpatients, and is doing an exceptional job in supporting new and existing services.
I hope you have enjoyed a great start to 2025, and I look forward to hearing how we can further support your practices here at Cromwell Hospital over the coming weeks.
Steve Bellingham, Chief Nursing Officer

An update from Dietetics
Cromwell Hospital benefits from a wide breadth of dietetic expertise, and the Dietetics team is now seeking further opportunities to engage with and support consultant services.
The team wishes to build on its strong foundations of MDT work to support consultants in accomplishing world-class care and delivering healthy nutritional outcomes for patients. The team is keen to develop new dietetic services in line with key consultant-led services currently provided at the hospital.
This year, the team will be enhancing and developing several dietetic specialities – including Paediatrics, Gastroenterology, Colorectal, and HPB – so consultants can expect to see an increased dietetics presence within MDT meetings. The team also has a particular interest in pre-operative nutritional optimisation, and they hope to widen this provision within the coming months.
Throughout 2025, the team will continue to support both inpatients and outpatients in optimising their nutritional status and achieving their nutritional goals successfully.

Joint allergy and ENT clinic at London Medical
London Medical is now accepting patients at a new allergy clinic, led by Dr Florentina Dumitru, Consultant in Allergy, and Ms Romana Kuchai, Consultant ENT Surgeon.
The clinic, which is the first and only of its kind available privately in the UK, allows eligible patients who require complex treatment to receive input from specialists in both allergy and ENT.
This service is suitable for allergies of all types, including hay fever, food allergies, drug allergies, eczema, asthma, urticaria and angioedema, anaphylaxis, and more.
Patients who attend the clinic will be able to have a skin prick allergy test, find out their results, and receive a treatment plan, in just one visit. Occasionally patients may require additional investigations, such as blood tests, breathing tests, or nasal endoscopy, which can be organised on-site, often on the same day.
For patients with severe allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis due to allergies, Dr Dumitru can offer immunotherapy or desensitisation with specific allergens.
If you are interested in referring patients to this service, please use our dedicated referral form (PDF, 236Kb).
Reminder: MRI safety
Please be reminded that it is your responsibility to ensure that any patients referred for an MRI are safe to undergo the procedure.
As part of our efforts to ensure that we adhere to the MHRA guidelines, we expect all referrers to fill in MRI safety questionnaires for their patients. This is to reduce the likelihood of patients attending examinations that are unsafe for them to undertake.
If you require support with this, please contact Sheena Murchie, Divisional Manager - Diagnostic Imaging, at sheena.murchie@cromwellhospital.com.
Eolas app for antimicrobial guidance
We have recently moved to the app Eolas for easy access to antimicrobial guidance.
On the app, which can be accessed from any mobile device, you will be able to find all antimicrobial guidelines for treatment and surgical prophylaxis. Eolas will replace Microguide and is available in all app stores.
Antimicrobial prescribing at Cromwell Hospital is audited against the guidelines found on Eolas. If you feel your practice deviates from this, please contact Emma Guthrie, Lead Clinical Pharmacist, at emma.guthrie@cromwellhospital.com.
