Head and neck pathway

A rapid-access pathway providing a consultation and diagnostic tests for patients with oral lesions.

About the pathway

The head and neck pathway at Cromwell Hospital provides rapid access to a consultation and diagnostic tests with our world-leading head and neck team.

Your dentist has referred you onto this pathway as they have identified a mouth lesion that requires investigation.

Within the next 24 hours (Monday to Friday), a clinical nurse specialist will call you to discuss your symptoms and book your consultation and relevant diagnostics. This is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions.

Depending on your symptoms, you may not require further tests. If further tests are required, these may include a biopsy and/or imaging, such as MRI and ultrasound.

After your triage with the clinical nurse specialist, you will have a consultation with one of our head and neck consultants. This will either be:

  • Mr Alastair Fry, Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon
  • Mr Rafal Niziol, Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon

Diana Norinho, Head and Neck Clinical Nurse Specialist, is the dedicated point of contact for patients, family, and a link for any professionals involved in your care.

Please note that patients cannot refer themselves onto this pathway.

If you are concerned about oral lesions, please book an appointment with your dentist or a head and neck consultant.
