Patient testimonial: Bea’s hand recovery

Bea Park, a patient at Cromwell Hospital, describes how she recovered from a hand injury with help from our Therapies department.

Woman having physiotherapy for a hand and wrist injury

Bea was enjoying her time on a ski season when she fell while snowboarding and broke her wrist. On her return to the UK, she was told she would have to have an operation on her wrist.

Worried that she would have to cancel further travel plans, she turned to the hand therapy team at Cromwell Hospital to support her recovery.

Bea said: “Therapy was not something I’d ever considered that you might need for a wrist or a broken wrist. But as soon as you’re restricted in movement, and you are feeling vulnerable, therapy is the most important thing to get you back to where you were.”

Bea's treatment and recovery

Joe Prince, Hand Therapist at Cromwell Hospital, treated Bea.

Joe said: “Bea was referred to my service as she was looking for support recovering from an operation on her wrist. I provided a series of in-person hand therapy sessions, which included home exercises, to work on getting a full range of motion back for her hand.”

Bea was able to be discharged after six sessions with the team, and continue her travels abroad as planned.

She said: “My experience of hand therapy was a super positive one. Joe got me to the point from where I could barely look at my scar, feeling faint, and being upset because I couldn’t go travelling, and then a few weeks in I had a huge range of movement. I was able to touch my scar and massage it, which was a big thing, and then by the end of six sessions I was able to be fully discharged and go backpacking, which was amazing.”
