Arthrosamid injection
Arthrosamid is an innovative hydrogel injection that provides long-lasting relief from the symptoms of knee osteoarthritis – in just one treatment.
Arthrosamid is an innovative, non-surgical treatment for patients with knee osteoarthritis, which provides long-lasting relief from pain.
Traditionally, treatment for osteoarthritis has focused on symptom management, with recommended strategies including weight loss, physiotherapy, and knee braces. If these strategies prove ineffective, many patients will be advised to undergo knee replacement surgery, which often involves a long and complex recovery period.
Arthrosamid is unique in being the first and only approved injectable treatment for knee osteoarthritis that helps patients avoid the need for surgical intervention. It involves a special hydrogel injection, the contents of which permanently combine with the tissues of your knee to thicken it and provide a protective barrier in just one treatment.
In addition to diminished pain, patients can benefit from decreased joint stiffness, increased knee function, and an improved quality of life.
What is knee osteoarthritis?
Knee osteoarthritis, often shortened to knee arthritis, is when the cartilage of the knee joint breaks down. It is a long-term (chronic) condition, which often worsens over time.
The cartilage in your knee is important because it reduces friction and allows your bones to move freely. This cartilage is exposed to wear and tear on a daily basis; however, in most people, any damage will repair itself.
When you have osteoarthritis, the cartilage wears away and does not repair itself. Because there is no cartilage left to provide protection to your knee joint, you may experience symptoms like pain, swelling, and stiffness.
We don’t know precisely why people develop knee osteoarthritis, and there is currently no cure. Treatment options have been historically limited to pain relief and symptom management strategies, or surgery in severe cases.
You may be a suitable candidate for Arthrosamid if you have knee osteoarthritis that you are unable to effectively manage through painkillers and lifestyle modifications.
If you have certain health conditions, you may not be eligible for Arthrosamid; your consultant will be able to advise you further.
Most patients will not experience any side effects following their Arthrosamid injection. Occasionally, there may be mild joint pain or swelling which should subside within a few days to a few weeks. Patients with severe pain or swelling should notify their consultant immediately.
Arthrosamid can provide effective relief from knee osteoarthritis potentially for up to four years. The duration of the treatment’s effectiveness also depends on factors like the severity of your osteoarthritis and how active you are.
Arthrosamid is a short, one-step procedure that is delivered in an outpatient setting, using local anaesthesia to numb the area. The hydrogel is injected into your knee’s synovial cavity – occasionally, your consultant may use ultrasound to assist in this process. Once injected, the hydrogel disperses within the fluid of the synovial cavity and begins to combine with your knee tissue.
You can go home immediately after your procedure. Most patients will begin to feel the effects of their treatment (such as reduced pain) within four to six weeks, and some at three months.
As with other types of treatments, you should avoid strenuous activity for the first couple of weeks following your procedure. Many patients can benefit from structured rehabilitation, like physiotherapy, during their recovery period.
Hyaluronic acid is a substance that naturally occurs within the body, including within the fluid of the synovial cavity. When injected, it can help supplement the body’s own production of hyaluronic acid and provide benefits such as reduced pain and improved joint function. However, the effects of hyaluronic acid on knee osteoarthritis wear off quickly (often in under six months), meaning they need to be repeated frequently.
Arthrosamid is a safe, synthetic hydrogel which is made from 2.5% cross-linked polyacrylamide and 97.5% water. It is non-biodegradable, meaning that the body does not break it down – therefore, its effects are longer lasting. Arthrosamid is supported by over two decades of research.
