About our diagnostic tests
At the Heart and Lung Centre, we provide both invasive and non-invasive diagnostic tests for the detection of conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels.
Non-invasive tests are carried out at Cromwell Hospital in west London, with some tests available at our central London-based outpatient centre Basinghall Clinic. More invasive tests are carried out at our hospital-based catheterisation laboratory, commonly referred to as a cath lab.
We offer rapid access to consultations, with diagnostic tests often taking place on the same day – all under one roof.
Diagnostic tests for cardiovascular conditions
We provide a comprehensive range of diagnostic tests for suspected cardiovascular conditions. You will be offered the most relevant tests to your symptoms.
Bubble contrast echocardiogram
A bubble contrast echocardiogram (bubble echo) is an ultrasound test used to detect the presence of holes in the heart.
Cardiac angiogram
A cardiac angiogram is a specialist X-ray procedure performed in a cath lab that uses a special dye to help examine the blood vessels of the heart.
Cardiac CT scan
A cardiac CT scan uses X-ray beams to create a detailed image of the heart and arteries.
Cardiac MRI scan
A cardiac MRI scan is a non-invasive way of assessing the function and structure of the heart.
Dobutamine stress echocardiogram
This type of echocardiogram uses a medicine called dobutamine to measure the heart’s response to physical stress.
Doppler test
A Doppler test is a type of ultrasound that measures the rate of blood flow to your arms and legs.
Electrocardiogram
An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a routine investigation which records the electrical activity of your heart.
Exercise stress test
An exercise stress test is used to monitor heart symptoms, rhythm and blood pressure while you exercise.
Holter monitor
A Holter monitor is a small, wearable device that records the rhythm of the heart over a certain period of time more frequently for 24 hours.
Nuclear medicine test
A nuclear medicine test uses a small amount of injected radioactive material to examine how your body is functioning.
Tilt table test
A tilt table test examines whether symptoms of dizziness or lightheadedness are related to blood pressure or heartbeat changes.
Transthoracic echocardiogram
A transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) is the most common non-invasive type of echocardiogram and uses sound waves to image and record the heart.
24-hour blood pressure monitoring
A 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitor is used to record your blood pressure throughout the day, even when sleeping.
A catheterisation laboratory, more commonly referred to as a cath lab, is an examination room that contains specialist imaging equipment. Cath labs are where minimally invasive tests and procedures on the heart are carried out, like angiograms, ablations and pacemaker or defibrillator insertions.
Cath labs usually contain a variety of healthcare professionals, including consultants, nurses, radiographers, physiologists and scientists.
If you are diagnosed with a cardiovascular condition, you will be treated by our world-class consultants using state-of-the-art technology at our private London hospital.
