INUSpheresis®

INUSpheresis® is a form of therapeutic apheresis and lipoprotein apheresis that removes disease-promoting substances and specific cholesterols using a state-of-the-art filtration system. As a certified INUS partner, we are the only centre in the UK to offer this innovative treatment method. INUSpheresis® may be helpful as a long Covid fatigue treatment.

What is INUSpheresis®?

Apheresis is a medical term that refers to the process of blood being filtered through medical apparatus in order to remove, or filter out, a specific part – such as plasma or red blood cells.

INUSpheresis® is a form of therapeutic apheresis that removes disease-promoting substances and toxins using a state-of-the-art filtration system. INUS® technology provides both lipoprotein apheresis, for patients with high cholesterol, and blood plasma purification, for patients with chronic and autoimmune illnesses. It is often used as a treatment for long Covid fatigue.

INUSpheresis® is a safe, non-surgical, and well-tolerated treatment that is similar in process to dialysis and administered by specially trained healthcare professionals. Cromwell Hospital is proud to be the only INUS certified partner in the UK that offers this pioneering treatment.

Patient undergoing INUSpheresis treatment

INUSpheresis® treatment is similar in process to dialysis and is delivered within a comfortable outpatient environment. Each treatment session takes between two to three hours, and the amount of sessions required is dependent on what condition is being treated.

Two infusion lines are placed, one in each arm within the bend of the elbow. Blood flows into the INUSpheresis® machine where the targeted substances are removed using a special filtration system before being returned to the body.

The machine is equipped with smart sensors so that healthcare professionals can continuously monitor your progress throughout treatment, and adjust if necessary.

INUSpheresis® specifically removes substances that promote inflammation within the body. These include:

  • lipids, such as cholesterol
  • pathogenic proteins, such as tumour-associated proteins
  • protein-bound toxic substances
  • fat-soluble toxic substances
  • complex infection toxins
  • pathogenic antibodies
  • inflammatory substances, including CRP and TNF-a

INUSpheresis® is a safe and well-tolerated treatment, similar in process to dialysis. Only inflammatory substances are removed from the blood, which means all beneficial components will remain.

At Cromwell Hospital, our clinicians and nurses have received specialist training from INUS Health in administering the procedure.

Lipoprotein apheresis

Lipoprotein apheresis, also known as LDL-apheresis, is used to remove cholesterol from the blood. It is often recommended for patients who have a genetic condition called familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), which causes elevated cholesterol levels that may not respond to diet and medication.

If cholesterol levels are too high, patients may develop cardiovascular complications such as heart disease and stroke. Therefore, it is important that cholesterol levels are strictly controlled, which is something that can be achieved using INUSpheresis® technology.

Blood plasma purification

INUSpheresis® technology can also be used for blood plasma purification, an innovative form of treatment for chronic and autoimmune conditions including long Covid and chronic fatigue.

By removing disease-promoting and inflammatory substances from the blood, INUSpheresis® stimulates the immune system and the body's own self-healing abilities. Many patients see benefits after their very first session.

INUSpheresis® may be helpful in the treatment of the following conditions:

  • long Covid
  • Lyme disease
