Systemic anti-cancer therapy

Systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) is the use of drugs to treat or control cancer. This includes cytotoxic chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, hormone therapy, or a combination of these. SACT can be given alone or together with other treatments (surgery or radiotherapy) to treat cancer.

About systemic anti-cancer therapy

At our internationally recognised Integrated Cancer Campus, we have a range of world-leading oncology consultants in all major cancers.

Our experienced teams have access to some of the latest, as well as the most established, cancer drugs. Being at the forefront of these new medicines means our patients have access to targeted cancer drugs that can both treat their cancer and reduce their symptoms and pain.

The length of treatment and type of drugs used will vary, according to the type of cancer. SACT treatment may also be combined with other treatments such as radiotherapy and/or surgery, depending on the circumstances.

Where suitable, patients may undergo what is described as adjuvant therapy, where chemotherapy medications are administered after surgery. This is designed to kill any small, remaining cancer cells to significantly reduce the chances of recurrence or relapse.

About our Chemotherapy Day Unit

Our seven-bay chemotherapy day unit, which was fully refurbished in 2024, provides a comfortable and relaxing environment in which patients can receive treatment.

Situated within an area of the hospital which receives plenty of natural light, our state-of-the-art unit features three dedicated ‘pods’ and four bays. To ensure privacy for patients, our pod spaces are equipped with sliding glass doors and our bays with curtains.

Depending on the length of treatment, two of our bays also feature beds for optimum comfort, while our other spaces feature fully reclining chairs.

In February 2025, the Chemotherapy Day Unit was assessed by Macmillan and received re-accreditation for the Macmillan Quality Environment Mark (MQEM), scoring the highest mark possible. This award means that our environment successfully meets the needs of people living with cancer.

Services we provide

As well as providing you with the treatment you need, our teams are always looking for other ways to make you feel a little better.

The latest technology to help you keep your hair.

This scalp-cooling cap (more comfortable than others on the market) narrows the blood vessels in the scalp during treatment, meaning that less of the drugs reach the hair follicle.

It’s not possible to stop hair loss altogether, but evidence shows that over 80% of patients who use Paxman did not feel they needed to wear a head covering or wig.

During SACT treatment, you’re likely to want different food to usual; most patients find they can only manage smaller portions and want to avoid particular flavours.

Our nurses and dieticians have worked together to come up with a special menu of light bites and fruit shakes. We’ve also introduced ‘Wish for a Dish’, where patients can have their favourite food from home cooked to order especially for them.

We’ll be happy to make the necessary arrangements to ensure your comfort is our priority.

Other services available in the Chemotherapy Day Unit include:

  • 24-hour on-call service for patients to report symptoms and side effects related to their cancer or treatment
  • pre-SACT blood tests and assessment for patients, carried out 24 to 48 hours prior to having treatment
  • infusion of blood products and other supportive drugs for cancer
  • rapid access and referral to a multi-disciplinary team as needed
