About Mr Alessandro Viviano

Mr Alessandro Viviano is a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon and leading Aortic Surgeon at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, based at Hammersmith Hospital. With nearly two decades of experience in cardiac surgery and over three years in his current role. He specialises in adult cardiac surgery and complex aortic procedures. He also serves as the Clinical Governance Lead for Cardiac Surgery at Imperial College London, prioritising high standards of patient care and surgical excellence.

Mr Viviano graduated from the University of Rome in 2007. He pursued specialisation in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Rome and later within the London Deanery, training at institutions such as Imperial College London, The Royal Sussex County Hospital, Guy's Hospital, and St George’s Hospital. He further honed his skills during an Advanced Cardiac and Aortic Fellowship at Waikato Hospital in New Zealand. Alongside his surgical training, he earned an MD Res from St George's University of London and King's College London. Mr Viviano has participated in international electives and fellowships across Italy, New Zealand, Germany, the Netherlands, the USA, and China, keeping him at the forefront of cardiac surgery and enabling him to incorporate innovative techniques into his practice.

Mr Viviano has extensive experience in complex aortic surgery, including reoperations and emergency repair of acute aortic dissections. He is highly experienced in coronary surgery, with a preference for arterial revascularisation, and is dedicated to minimally invasive surgery. He covers the Northwest London Acute Aortic Dissection rota for emergency Type A Aortic Dissection repair.

At Imperial College, Mr Viviano has played a crucial role in developing services for aortic dissection and complex aortic surgery. He established the Aortovascular Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) to foster collaboration among healthcare professionals, ensuring comprehensive patient care. He is also working towards creating a dedicated specialised aortovascular clinic and an advanced aortic fellowship at Imperial College London.

Mr Viviano mentors the next generation of cardiothoracic surgeons within the London Deanery. His approachable nature and emphasis on effective communication create a supportive learning environment. His academic contributions include numerous peer-reviewed publications and national and international presentations, reflecting his commitment to advancing the field.

Outside of surgery, Mr Viviano enjoys a fulfilling family life with his wife and two young children. He has a passion for travel, which allows him to explore different cultures and enriches his perspective in medicine. Fluent in English and Italian, he also has a good grasp of German and Japanese, reflecting his diverse interests and commitment to lifelong learning.
