About Dr Rahim Kanji
Dr Rahim Kanji is an outstanding Consultant Cardiologist, working at the Cromwell Hospital, the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and the Hammersmith Hospital, part of the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
He provides excellent general cardiology care, treating patients with shortness of breath (owing to heart failure, valvular and structural abnormalities), palpitations (owing to arrhythmia), hypertension, hypercholesterolaemia and chest pain (owing to heart attacks and angina). In fact, for the latter, Dr Kanji is an expert, and investigates such patients with non-invasive tests, as well as invasive angiography, and treats with balloons and stents (angioplasty) as required. During this, he uses the latest technologies and best equipment, including intravascular imaging, ensuring the best possible, tailored treatment, minimising the risk of stent failure and further heart attacks.
It is this fantastic care, and the care delivered by his colleagues which has resulted in the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust having the lowest age-standardised mortality rate in England.
At the Hammersmith Hospital, Dr Kanji is mainly focused on the treatment of patients with severe heart attacks, where he performs emergency lifesaving angioplasty.
Dr Kanji also spends a lot of his time and effort delivering talks and education to GPs (as well as cardiology trainees) as he recognises that the majority of cardiac care is provided by GPs in the community, and it is his passion to ensure all patients, including those he is not directly involved with, are in receipt of the best, latest care.
His delivery of outstanding care is only possible thanks to his world-class training in prestigious institutions and of course hard work! He obtained a BSc (in Endocrinology) and a medical degree from Imperial College London where he graduated with distinction. He underwent post-graduate medical training, and thereafter cardiology specialist training in the highly competitive and prestigious London - Imperial deanery, before undertaking a PhD in the risk stratification of patients with heart attacks and aortic stenosis, also awarded by Imperial College London (National Heart and Lung Institute). In fact, thanks to his research, he is considered an expert in anti-platelet therapy and the management of patients with thrombosis (heart attacks), and has published his work in high-impact factor journals.
He is also a pioneer in the virtual wards and virtual hospital space. He is in fact the lead for the chest pain virtual ward at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Trust, where he has extensive experience, and managed the largest cohort of patients in the UK.
Dr Kanji is also very interested in improving population health, including the optimisation of patients at risk to prevent future heart attacks and disease, and is currently working with public health leads for London to create novel treatment pathways and models.
Dr Kanji has several publications in peer-reviewed journals, and actively speaks at national and international conferences, including Diabetes Professional Care, Cardio Renal Metabolic UK Summit, EuroThrombosis EuroVessels and British Society for Haemostasis and Thrombosis.
Dr Kanji would be honoured and privileged to see you at the Cromwell Hospital, and is fully committed to treating, and improving your quality of life.
