We are delighted to announce that Cromwell Hospital won three awards at the LaingBuisson Independent Healthcare Awards on Tuesday 7 October.
We won every category in which we had finalists, and huge congratulations go to:
Medical Practice
Alastair Bovell, Senior Clinical Pharmacist, and Jackie Portsmouth, Consultant Nurse Infection Control, who won the medical practice category for the antimicrobial stewardship programme.
This programme addresses issues around consultants prescribing varying antibiotics in different ways. Alastair and Jackie’s work uses evidence-based recommendations to consultants to ensure the very best clinical outcome for the patient. With antibiotic resistance now a serious concern, their actions also bring a benefit to wider society.
Innovation
Christian Day, Senior Radiographer, who won the innovation category for introducing a bladder management system in Radiotherapy.
Patients with pelvic tumours need to have a full bladder for a pre-radiotherapy CT scan, but they can have difficulty with bladder awareness and control. Christian and the team introduced a preliminary ultrasound scan so that patients only have a CT scan when they have the correct bladder volume. This avoids both unnecessary exposure to radiation through having to repeat the CT scan, and unnecessary discomfort for the patient. It has also resulted in much more efficient use of our treatment machine.
Excellence in Training
Mark Elsworthy, Treatment Supervisor, who was joint winner in the excellence in training category for training clinical staff on Image Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT).
Mark has taken his knowledge of IGRT and developed a rigorous and creative training package. It takes a workbook approach, focusing on individual cases and the learnings that each radiographer can take away from these. The training covers all levels of knowledge and experience, and the end result is that our therapeutic radiographers are at the leading edge of IGRT provision.
Philippa Fieldhouse, General Manager at Cromwell Hospital commented; “Our people do such an outstanding job and I am absolutely delighted that Mark, Christian, Jackie and Alastair’s dedication, innovation and willingness to ‘go the extra mile’ has been recognised at such a high profile event. Congratulations to all of our Cromwell winners, I am extremely proud of you”.
