About Dr Doraid Alrifai

Dr Doraid Alrifai is an experienced medical oncology physician who manages patients suffering from thoracic (lung, mesothelioma, thymoma) and urological (kidney, ureter, bladder, prostate, and penile) malignancies. He is based at St George’s University Hospitals, NHS Foundation Trust, one of the largest teaching hospitals in the United Kingdom.

Dr Alrifai graduated from the University of Birmingham Medical School in 2007. He has trained throughout London in some of the biggest academic institutions in the world, such as University College London Hospitals (UCLH) and Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. He has experience in both early and late phase clinical trials and is a principal and sub-investigator on numerous oncology studies.

Dr Alrifai has been awarded an MSc at the Institute of Cancer Research and a PhD focusing on thoracic malignancies at University College London. He has published in some of the most prestigious journals in the world including the New England Journal of Medicine as well as contributing to chapters in oncology-based textbooks.

Dr Alrifai has won national and international prizes for his work in medical oncology. He is heavily involved in teaching and continues to chair and speak at regional and international educational and charity events. Dr Alrifai also leads the junior clinical faculty at St George’s and is heavily involved in the recruitment and mentorship of new doctors to the oncology department. Dr Alrifai also serves as a reviewer for highly regarded national and international journals.

As well as working as a full-time cancer treating physician, Dr Alrifai has also played a crucial role in the running of the COVID Medicine Delivery Unit (CMDU) at St George’s Hospital. His contribution can be reviewed in news outlets such as the BBC. His robust understanding of general medicine has allowed him to confidently work in this department, paralleled to his ever-growing cancer work.

Dr Alrifai’s first language is English but he is also able to communicate in Arabic.
