Managing complex spasticity, spinal/neuropathic pain, MSK conditions in long term wheelchair users, shoulder dysfunction in wheelchair users, Tetraplegia hand reconstruction and Bariatric interventions in SCI with a very high BMI (>30.0) He regularly undertake Botox Injections, Intra-articular MSK interventions, including trigger point injections and Intra-thecal Baclofen test dose for severe spasticity in SCI patients.

Mr Manish Desai is a Consultant in Spinal Cord Injury and Rehabilitation Medicine with expertise in Spinal cord injury, Neurological and Trauma rehabilitation.

The London Spinal Cord Injury Centre, Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust, Stanmore has employed him since June 2012.

Annually he reviews approximately 550-600 complex spinal injuries patients on an outpatient basis, and at a given time has a minimum of 13 inpatients with complex spinal injuries under his care for specialist rehabilitation at The London SCIC, The Wellington Hospital and RBH.

He undertakes medical work, related with complex rehabilitation assessments (e.g. Hydrotherapy, use of FES, Tendon transfer procedures to improve Tetraplegic hand function, Exoskeleton, Gravity assisted Treadmill, use of SAEBOFLEX, ARMEO, LOKOMAT, and Intra Thecal Baclofen test dose and spasticity assessment).

Mr Desai received his specialist rehabilitation medicine training in Newcastle upon Tyne, Middlesbrough and Sunderland from 2007 to 2011.

Mr Desai has 9 peer reviewed publications, 1 under submission and have had been invited as a speaker and work presented at many national and international meetings.

Mr Desai remains very much interested in teaching and education of postgraduate trainees, nurses and other healthcare professionals.

He is a fellow member of Royal College of Physicians, London.

He has been awarded fellowship by Royal College of Physicians, London.

He has been appointed as a Regional Speciality advisor for Rehabilitation Medicine, by Royal College of Physicians, London.

He has been appointed as an honorary clinical senior lecturer in the Institute of Orthopaedics and Musculoskeletal Science, UCL.

Mr Desai received “Best services for tetraplegia Year 2016” award, by “Regain” sports charity.

Teaching and training
The London Spinal Cord Injury Centre provides training to doctors specialising in rehabilitation medicine from the London, East of England and Military Deaneries.

Mr Desai regularly attended the Training Programme meetings for Rehabilitation Medicine between 2012- 2017. He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians specialist advisory committee on Rehabilitation Medicine training.

He regularly contributes to Spinal Cord Injury Study days for a group of new nurses, junior doctors and therapists.

Mr Desai was invited as a speaker at International Conference in Spine and Spinal Disorders 2018, at London, WCORT at Milan in July 2018, SIA academy 2017 and 2018, and Back up Trust 2019, 2021.

He was recently invited by Oxford rehabilitation Unit to deliver a talk on MSCC rehabilitation, in June 2021.

Leadership and service development
Mr Desai has developed specialist spinal Rehabilitation services, at London SCIC for MSCC/ Spinal Tumour patients, SCI with Polytrauma and for Cauda Equina Syndrome.

He has successfully developed a world class MSCC (Metastatic Spinal Cord Compression) rehabilitation Integrated Care Pathway and Cauda Equina Syndrome specialist Rehabilitation Integrated Care Pathway at London SCIC, Stanmore.
